As people around the world prepare for the gift-exchanging season ahead, it’s also a useful time to reflect on the gifts we already have.
In particular, the gift of sight.
Time to Reflect
As we are all listening to the beloved (and some not so-beloved) Christmas songs playing wherever we go at this time of year, it’s worth considering that December is also National Gift of Sight Month in America – a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of eye health, and the transformative power of vision care.
The Gift that Keeps on Giving
The Precious Gift of Sight
This month reminds us that clear vision is not just a physical gift, but it is a gateway to opportunity, independence, and a better quality of life.
However, for millions of Americans, access to eye care remains a challenge.
Rural areas, underserved communities, and patients with mobility limitations often face barriers that prevent them from receiving the eye care they need:
“The burden of eye conditions and vision impairment is not borne equally: it is often far greater in people living in rural areas, those with low incomes, women, older people, people with disabilities, ethnic minorities and indigenous populations”
World Health Organization, World Report on Vision
This is where innovation meets purpose, and it’s where our mission to make vision care accessible for all comes into focus: “wherever there is an eye exam, there’s an epiCam”
epiCam: Providing practitioners with a way to take retinal imagery wherever they go
Breaking Barriers with Ultraportable Technology
Traditional retinal imaging devices (aka ‘desktop fundus cameras’) are often confined to clinical settings due to their size, cost, and lack of portability.
But what happens when the patient can’t reach the clinic, or when the clinic can’t reach the patient?
Our cutting-edge, award-winning, ultraportable retinal imaging device is designed to bridge that gap.
Lightweight, easy to use, and equipped with advanced imaging capabilities, the epiCam empowers healthcare providers to bring comprehensive eye care directly to patients, wherever they are – Whether it’s a school in a remote town, a bedside in a hospital, or an outreach clinic in an urban center, our devices are transforming the way care is delivered around the World.

The Gift of Early Detection
Eye health is about more than just seeing clearly. Retinal imaging can play a critical role in detecting serious conditions like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and macular degeneration – often before symptoms appear.
Early diagnosis can make the difference between preserving sight and losing it. By making retinal imaging more accessible, we’re working with healthcare providers to include retinal imaging as part of the patient’s annual eye exams.
“At least 2.2 billion people have vision impairment or blindness, of which over 1 billion cases could have been prevented”
World Health Organization, World report on vision
As Dr Alarcos Cieza (WHO) says: “Millions of people have severe vision impairment and are not able to participate in society to their fullest because they can’t access rehabilitation services. In a world built on the ability to see, eye care services (including rehabilitation) must be provided closer to communities for people to achieve their maximum potential”
Making an Impact During National Gift of Sight Month
This National Gift of Sight Month, we’re reminded of the profound impact that accessible eye care can have on individuals, families, and communities, and encourage you all to get involved.
Here are just a few of the ways you can join the mission:
Spread Awareness: Share the importance of regular eye exams and the role they play in maintaining overall health
Support Outreach Efforts: Advocate for or participate in initiatives that bring vision care to underserved areas
Embrace Innovation: Consider how advanced technologies like ultraportable retinal imaging can be integrated into your practice, or community health program, to make a broader impact to patients
Help Keep Eyes Healthy: There is a myriad of information available as to how people can help themselves and help protect their vision, so please share this and help spread the word as to the importance of regular/annual eye exams!
Even if you only change things for one person, that’s potentially one person who won’t suffer life changing vision issues – all because you cared ❤
Reduced screen time is just one of the many tips given by bodies such as the American Optometric Association.
Eye Care, because #WeCare – Looking Ahead
So, as we celebrate this National Gift of Sight Month, at epipole we remain committed to our vision of a world where quality eye care is within reach for everyone.
By continuing to innovate and collaborate, we’re not just improving access to eye care, we’re working with some incredible eyecare and healthcare professionals around the world to change lives, and we look forward to doing even more in 2025.
